Are You Getting the Support You Need to Lead Your Team Effectively?

Being a leader doesn’t mean you have to do everything alone. Your job is to support your team, but you can only do that effectively, if you’re getting the right support when you need it.

Having the right support systems in place will help you get the best from yourself, which in turn helps you get the best from your team.

Clarity and self-awareness

The type and level of support you need will vary throughout your career, and it’s up to you to be proactive.

Define what “support” actually means for you. Do you require strategic thinking time, emotional grounding, operational backup, or coaching. Identify your blind spots through regular reflection and feedback so you know which support will genuinely move you forward.

Set personal leadership standards so you can spot when support is missing or misaligned.

Clarity checklist:

  • I know my leadership priorities for the next 90 days.
  • I can clearly articulate the type of support I need (strategic, operational, emotional, developmental).
  • I understand my blind spots and where support will have the biggest impact.

Feedback

Build a trusted feedback circle of people who tell you the truth, not what they think you want to hear. Schedule structured feedback conversations rather than waiting for issues to surface, and use data plus lived experiences to ensure feedback is balanced and actionable.

Feedback checklist:

  • I receive feedback regularly, not just during crises or reviews.
  • I use both data and narrative to understand how my leadership is landing.
  • I act on feedback and follow up with the people who gave it.

Mentors, coaches, peers and outside perspectives

Coaches, mentors, and peer groups can be an excellent source of support. You can learn from people who already know how to solve the problems you are facing or who will challenge assumptions, strengthen decision‑making, and prevent tunnel vision.

External perspective checklist:

  • I have a mentor who has solved the problems I’m facing.
  • I have a coach or external sounding board who challenges my assumptions.
  • I regularly step outside my organisation to gain fresh perspective.

Operational support

During busy periods, transitions or crises, you might require more hands-on operational support.

Regularly audit your workload to identify tasks that should be delegated or automated so you’re not the bottleneck for decisions. Create clarity around roles and responsibilities to reduce friction and free up leadership capacity.

Operational checklist:

  • I’ve audited my workload and identified tasks that should be delegated.
  • My team has clarity on roles, responsibilities, and decision rights.
  • I’m not routinely pulled into work that others should own.

Emotional and psychological support

Develop resilience practices, create boundaries that protect your energy, and normalise asking for help. Pretending you don’t need support sets a bad example and increases the risk of burnout.

Emotional checklist:

  • I have healthy outlets for stress (reflection, journaling, supervision, therapy).
  • I have boundaries that protect my energy and focus.
  • I feel safe asking for help when I need it.

Strategic alignment and governance

Ensure you have access to accurate information, dashboards, reports and insights, so you can make confident decisions. Clarify expectations with your board or senior stakeholders and review support structures regularly to ensure they evolve with organisational needs.

Strategic checklist:

  • I have clarity from senior stakeholders on what “good leadership” looks like right now.
  • I have access to the right information to make confident decisions.
  • I review my support structures regularly to ensure they still fit the organisation’s needs and my own.

Culture and team dynamics

Build a psychologically safe environment where your team can raise issues early and encourage upward feedback so you understand how your leadership is landing. Demonstrate openness to create a culture where support flows both ways.

Culture checklist:

  • My team feels psychologically safe raising issues early.
  • I encourage upward feedback and act on it.
  • I’ve built a culture where support is normal, not a sign of weakness.

Continuous learning and improvement

Invest in leadership development that matches your needs and stay close to emerging trends in people leadership, communication, and organisational psychology. Treat leadership as something you refine and build on.

Learning checklist:

  • I consistently invest in leadership training and development
  • I stay close to emerging trends in communication, people leadership, and organisational psychology.
  • I regularly reflect on what’s working and what isn’t.

Your leadership support quick audit

Hopefully, the above has helped you identify where the gaps are in your support systems. It’s important to review these regularly as your needs will change. Here’s a handy checklist you can use once a month to make sure you are still getting the right support.

  • I know what support I need
  • I’ve communicated it clearly
  • I’m getting honest feedback
  • I have external perspective
  • My workload is sustainable
  • My emotional support is strong
  • My stakeholders are aligned
  • My team feels safe and supported
  • I’m continuously learning and improving

Give yourself a score out of ten for each and look to improve the areas with the lowest scores.
